When the Tisbert family, owners of Valley Dream Organic Produce Farm, announced one sunny August afternoon that they'd always wanted to sponsor some sort of festival, I didn't allow them to think twice. I jumped in and said "I'll take care of it" and away we went. Not two months later the family and I stood in a vast hay-field in the rain ... shivering ... freezing our butts off ... and grinning ear to ear. Success. Rainy, freezy, fabulous success! Now I'm well aware that everyone in town isn't necessarily living the organic lifestyle. Actually, according to treehugger.com only 58% of consumers prefer organic foods, and only about half of that actually go so far as to purchase organic foods. (Sorry for the factoid - I was honestly curious) Anyone who attended the festival will tell you, this wasn't some crunchy granola sales pitch trying to push the organic lifestyle. No - this was a big fat fabulous party designed to celebrate something that is very important to the Tisbert family and incidentally has become very important to me: supporting local growers, local businesses, local artists.

Despite unconscionably low temperatures, constant drizzle and plenty of mud, nearly 20 local vendors showed up to make the best of what the festival had to offer. On a poor-weather day like this, vendor and entertainment no shows are usually an event's greatest downfall. Not in this case. I was thrilled and amazed to see 90% of our vendors turn out, and both entertainers - despite the misery of the situation. Every one of them put on a wide smile (and a pair of muck boots)and got to work setting out their wares, whether it be canned produce, steaming hot beverages or hand-made arts and crafts. TWO woodworkers arrived, both setting up shop with extensive furniture displays as well as workbenches and tools. I was amazed to see the lengths to which each of our event vendors went to make the best of the day and provide the best experience for those brave souls who arrived to partake in the festivities.

Speaking of brave souls - did you SEE the Potato Sack Fashion Show!? The rivalry was narrowed to only the most serious of competitors - an ice cold downpour will do that - and the competition was on. From hand-sewn purses and hairbands to a wedding gown with a train, each of our fashion show entrants gave it their all and had an absolute blast doing it. It was SO HARD choosing just one winner and one runner up - I wanted to award everyone for their hard work and dedication! Special thanks to everyone who struggled through cutting and stitching that miserable itchy burlap - even if you didn't make it to the show.

Peter "Professor Fairbanks" Miller strummed a wicked fiddle - he's my new favorite musician. Tammy Fletcher rocked the house. It was fabulous to see community members Deb Nevil and Stephen Morabito out there cuttin' the ... grass, and enjoying the music. Raffle prizes were awarded to ecstatic neighbors, contest winners jumped for joy - applesauce everywhere, by the way.

Despite the understandably low attendance - we saw roughly 80 people that day, everyone involved is raring to get involved again next year. Will there be a next year? Do you even need to ask?

I attended this fantastic marketing workshop today. It was sponsored by the Vermont SBDC and Lamoille Economic Development Corp., and the speaker was a woman named Amy Mattinat, who is the unlikely owner of Auto Craftsmen car repair in Montpelier. I have to say, I've sat through a multitude of marketing workshops, some better than others, and I found this one to be incredibly helpful and more than worth the $25 fee. Plus, duh, they offered free donuts and coffee.

I'd like to share a smidgen of what I learned today. Below are the top 10 mistakes most businesses make.

#10: Continuing to do something the same way but expecting different results. Consequently, this is also the definition of insanity.

#9: Trying to reinvent the wheel.

#8: Not spending time on marketing.

#7: Not understanding that marketing is math. Track your numbers!

#6: Not having a marketing plan and not keeping it flexible.

#5: Copying your competitors ... just because.

#4: Marketing too big or to the wrong target market. Also known as 'shotgun advertising.'

#3: Using the wrong media or choosing media advertising over your own current and prospective clients list.

#2: Image advertising versus call to action advertising.

#1: Not staying in touch with your current and past clients. (Your biggest fans)

Is Online Marketing Right for You?

How do you know whether your business needs online marketing? First and foremost, you need to answer some questions about your business.

1. What are you selling? Are you selling a product? A service? Or an upcoming event?

Flat out, services are hard to sell. You can be the best landscaper in New England but the fact will always remain that unless a consumer is already looking to hire a landscaper they won't have much use for your service - especially considering the current economy. In today's economic climate, even the most steadfast consumers are morphing into do-it-yourselfers. Of course, hiring a professional photographer for your daughter's wedding will yield you higher quality photos of her special day - but considering that all of us have access to a camera, perhaps even a really GOOD camera, why not save the $3500? I'm not saying it's the right thing ... but it is the reality of the situation.

If you do provide a service, not all hope is lost. Document your successes. Take a photograph of a service well-rendered. Contact past clients and ask them for a short testimonial describing the quality of your work. Consumers want to see something concrete, so even though you may be an auto mechanic, you still need to give them what they want.

Products are much easier to sell due to the fact that photographs can be posted and prices are usually concrete. Even though a consumer might have no need for yet another hand-woven scarf, they're going to see photographs with a wide variety of hand-woven scarf styles and get the pang. You know the pang. The pang is that thing that has you adding candy bars and magazines to your pile of groceries at the check out line. We're ALL susceptible to the pang.

Events are fun. Even if what you're selling is in actuality a service or product, why not make it into an event? Examples of events can be open houses, grand re-openings, welcome receptions ... it can even be as simple as a monthly or weekly promotion. "Place your order in the month of May and we'll throw in a honey-scented candle, on the house!" Consumers LOVE promotions.

2. Do you currently have an online presence?

I hate to say it kids, but it's the wave of right now - and considering all the do-it-yourself blog templates, the social networking sites, and the drag and drop web-building programs, you really have no excuse. Get online, and do it in a big way. It doesn't have to cost a lot. It doesn't have to be phony or pretentious. There are plenty of mom-and-pop or work-from-my-laptop-while-watching-the-Simpsons businesses out there who have polished, professional,full-service websites. The purpose of a website or other online presence is to give consumers an avenue for finding out about you. Unless you have a storefront on Church Street or are paying out daily/weekly/monthly for pricey print ads or radio commercials, people aren't going to know about you. If people don't know about you, people don't care about you. MAKE THEM CARE. An inexpensive, simple website and an hour spent online registering with google, yahoo, etc could make or break your business. And hey, it sure makes my job easier in terms of promoting you. I can post on PromoteVT all day long "Hey check out Joe, he makes pitchforks in a variety of pastel colors!" OR I can say "Joe's custom painted pitchforks are a must buy for Mother's Day. Check out Joe online at www.pastelpitchforks.com" See how I combined an EVENT and a WEBSITE?? Now if that doesn't make you want to buy a pastel pitchfork, I don't know what will.

Keep Those Ears Ringing

As a small business owner in Vermont I think it's so vital that I advertise my business, just a little, each and every day. Some days this can be as simple as meeting someone on the street and telling them about what I do. Some days I create ads and send them out via the Chamber of Commerce. I hold an account with a local radio station. They have two commercials for me on file, and at any time I can call up the producer and say "hey, please run commercial xyz three times this week." It doesn't cost me that much, and the option is always available. No one said you have to pay out consistently, every day or every week. The idea is to mix it up and constantly hit new demographics. Earlier this week I decided "what the hay" and put together a discount promo which I then emailed to a list of 200 potential clients. Maybe I'll get a call, maybe I won't, but it hardly puts me out to try. If business doesn't grow, then it sits stagnant. And lordy, we can't have that! I work in the service industry; aka: I don't sell a product, so for me to receive one phone call or email a week from a potential new client, even if I don't necessarily book them, I feel like I'm doing really well. Not all advertising works all the time, so the idea is to keep it constant. Keep my name out there. Keep people talking. Eventually ... at some point, a person who genuinely needs my help, and is willing to pursue it, will listen ...

Advertising 101 ... Networking

Something Cecile commented on yesterday's posting reminded me ... Chambers of Commerce, let's talk about these. I'm personally member of three different Vermont Chambers. Aside from that I'm also a member of the National Association of Professional Women. I've spent a LOT of would-be advertising dollars on getting here. Now I hate to admit it but some of these organizations are a waste of my time and hard-earned money. One such org, however, is WELL WORTH the Chamber dues and has brought me such copious advertising and networking opportunity that really I feel like I owe them more. This amazing Org is the Lamoille Valley Chamber of Commerce. Now I don't work for them so please see this as it is: a VERY satisfied customer giving a plug. LVCC publishes a weekly e-newsletter that circulates roughly 5000 readers. Advertising in that newsletter (for members) is FREE. Seeing as I do a lot of community events in the Lamoille Area this is a massive media outlet for me. On top of that we have the weekly mixers with area businesses, the Rte 15 Festival, the quarterly publications and other Chamber-run events. And by the way, their dues for a small business such as myself are only $200 annual. Like I said, I'm a member of two other chambers as well as the NAPW and when the time comes to renew ... well, LVCC is the only one who will be seeing MY advertising dollars.

As a promoter, I've come to lean most heavily on internet, Chamber, and word of mouth networking for my advertising. The newspaper and radio rooms like me, don't get me wrong, and they LOVE my money, but I've come to think of them both as last resorts. Internet is fabulous, cheap to maintain and available to the world ... IF you know how to direct the traffic. I have news for some of you who maybe aren't as tech savvy as others, just because you own a web-page doesn't mean anyone is seeing it. I've (sadly) seen businesses spend upwards of 12K on a fancy new webpage then be handed the controls by the developer and just watch it sit there. Websites, like anything, need advertising. There are google and yahoo listings, key word queries, social networking and block ads. A webpage is only as good as the potential consumers who browse to it, and if they didn't already know about Jim's Crab Emporium before the page was up, they certainly aren't going to be typing in www.jimscrabs.com any time soon. Now a properly handled webpage can be a gold mine. Once that baby is built, you're looking at usually $150 annual to keep it live and advertised, and for some of us, it may be all the advertising you need. (This totally depends on your business)

Which brings me to the wonders of social networking. Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, Reddit, Digg, Foursquare ... there are more but come on people, I'm not THAT much of a geek! These free networking options are AWESOME and so easy to start and maintain. If your business doesn't already have a Facebook page and/or Twitter then you need to get on that, pronto. I find both Facebook and Twitter to be fantastic segways for getting online consumers over to your regular website. With suggestions pushing you up in consumers faces all the time, at some point most people are going to get curious and click the link. If the page is catchy and interesting and the first thing they see is a link to your website, they're there. Voila, free advertising!

Finding Your Niche

I'd like to start out by saying THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to read my posting and comment. It's so important that we all work together to grow our small businesses and find success, and you have the right attitude! now for more ...

You know this reminds me of a funny coincidence. When I started my events planning business, working out of my home in Jeffersonville, I thought "this is great, no one does this." Within the first year of working I was blown away. Not only do other people actually do this, there are two of them, both young mothers like myself, both working from their homes, both within 15 minutes drive of my house! Absolute insanity! The first time I was faced with this I found myself at a crossroads. I had received a phone message from one such woman asking me to call her back so we could discuss the situation. This could have gone either way. I put a smile on my face though and picked up the phone, and ... amazingly, was met with the same positive attitude. I want to thank Mauranda Dalziel (former owner of PromoteVT), for that kind introduction into reality. This is a SMALL state, and we're ALL trying to make it. We can either fight eachother for the market or we can work together for the market. Mauranda and I chose to work together. A couple months later when I met Jackie, another events planner just up the road from me, I decided to extend the same hand that Mauranda had extended me, and now Jackie and I are working together.

Over the years I've come across a handful of businesses "at war" with other like-businesses. This attitude is beyond me, and really very sad. Though there may not be an infinite number of consumers for all of us to share, there are infinite approaches. How about, instead of fighting eachother, we, each and every one of us, get creative in our approach; find a niche market that isn't already being satisfied?

I've been introduced to a number of small-business groups. Many of you have probably heard of these: SCORE, BMI, Success Teams. These groups all share something in common: they are Vermont business owners sitting around a table and discussing how they can work together to be more successful. Though I haven't been able to join any of these groups yet I find it refreshing that I alone can carry this attitude with me into my business practices. You can too.

The Vermont "Rat Race"

Good morning Vermont businesses! I'm writing this note because, as you may have noticed, PromoteVT, though wildly popular with the online community, hasn't been doing much promoting lately. I'd like to have a conversation with you, a Vermont small business owner, about this fact. This conversation is long and multi-faceted, so today I will begin with an introduction. I appreciate you taking the time to read my note/blog and engaging in this conversation with me. I feel it can be hugely beneficial to both of us, and by extension, all of us. Cheers.

Background: My name is Nichole Gilbert. I own and operate a small business from my home in Jefferonsville, VT. Though I originally hail from San Diego, I've lived in VT almost 12 years now and whole-heartedly call Vermont my home. I have acknowledged to myself and my family that I will ALWAYS live here. I have no plans whatsoever to go back 'out west' or anywhere else for that matter. Why? Not because I feel stuck or apathetic about where I am like so many people do. No, not at all. I will never leave Vermont because Vermont is home. Vermont is amazing to me. Seriously. Stunning. The core values of Vermonters rest in what I find important: environment, recreation, community and a healthy, happy lifestyle. Not only that, Vermonters have an overwhelming sense of entrepreneurship that you don't find anywhere else. (In the world!) I feel so incredibly fortunate to be a part of the Vermont community.

My business is called Cambridge Event and Design. I've been working for myself officially for about 1.5 years but honestly (like most of us) I've been dabbling in working for myself on the side since I was only a kid. I went to a couple of colleges, eventually finished with one, got married and had babies. I held a handful of mid-level office positions and then, in 2009, it occurred to me that I may never be satisfied with my life if I kept on that same path of always going after someone else's dream. I know you know what I'm talking about. If you are a small business owner, or have ever dreamed about working for yourself, you have felt the very same way at some point. It's like one day you say to yourself, why am I doing this? Though this is Vermont, and not New York or Los Angeles, we DO honest to god have our own Vermont-form of the rat race. This rat race has become ever so much more prevalent in the last two-three years as unemployment has climbed and larger employers have dropped the ball on working on employee retention and employee happiness. If you do work for someone else, or have in the last several years, have you noticed this?

Relay for Life

"The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length ... Relay has grown into the world’s largest movement to end cancer. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Thanks to Relay participants, the American Cancer Society continues to save lives."

Meet Team HOPE. Vermont-native Melynda Sawyer is passionate about this cause. Though most Relay's last only a day, Melynda herself works tirelessly day and night to raise funds with not only a one-day relay, but also with a fund-raising dinner, dance and silent auction. The fund-raising event is planned for Friday, January 14, 2011 at 6pm in the Canadian Club located in Barre, VT.

Donation items are sorely needed. Edibles for the spaghetti dinner, a DJ and sound equipment for the dance, and numerous (new) items and gift certificates large and small for the silent auction. It's Turkey Time

Thanksgiving is about more than turkey dinner with the family right? This is a time for thanks, but it's also a time for giving. With the manic hustle-bustle and running around of families, sometimes trying to fit in two or even three turkey dinners in a day, it's easy to forget that not all of us are so fortunate. There are thousands of needy families in our Vermont communities. Record numbers of Vermonters are now signing up for state assistance and unemployment benefits. Children are being taught less to "eat healthy" and more to "eat enough." Community shelves are a wonderful asset to any hungry family, but community shelves need our help in continuing to provide their services.

One Vermont family, the Dalziel's, came up with a great charitable idea three years ago. They call it the Dalziel Family Turkey Drive, and they need your help in helping others. This November, you can participate in the Third Annual Dalziel Family Turkey Drive by making a donation online. All proceeds collected go toward the purchase of Thanksgiving Turkeys which are then donated directly to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf, so families of lesser means too can have access to the same Thanksgiving traditions that you and I already share in.

In her statement Marcie explains the influence.

"Along with my passion for horses, I have always had a passion for making art. At the turn of the new year, 2010, I thought this year I’d put the two together. I have been studying Centered Riding, which is an approach to horseback riding that combines aspects of meditation and martial arts. It has added to my already enormous appreciation of this animal. I am using the horse as a launching point to explore other formal aspects in my art, including simple black and white, and using color and paint in a way that is experimental for me. For me, it’s interesting to combine what I’ve learned during my centered riding lessons with what I’m doing in my studio. Breathing meditations while I’m painting is one example of how centered riding has informed my studio practice."

Marcie Vallette has lived in Vermont for over 2 decades, and is originally from the Boston area. A founding member of the East Johnson Plein Air Club, she works both on-site and in her studio. She is also a member of the Bryan Gallery, the NVAA, and
Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). Vallette has drawn and painted cover art, illustrated, and performed layout and design for books, magazines and numerous other kinds of publications. Exhibitions of her art have appeared regularly for 18 years throughout northern Vermont. She has a BFA from Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, an M.Ed from Johnson State College, and she spent 3 years on staff at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson. She is currently a first year nursing student at Vermont Technical College."

Helping Build Up Our Local Community

I wish I could say I knew what I wanted to do from childhood on. I wish I could say I had an MBA in communications and marketing. I suppose I could say it ... but I'd be lying. Cambridge Event & Design wasn't born of any lifelong drive. It was born of timing, necessity, and convenient work-experience. I've been in business for myself for only a year now. I know ... never admit such things ... but it's the truth. That's not to say I've only been doing this work for a year. On the contrary, somehow, someway, regardless of where I've been employed in the past or what my job description was, I always ended up being the business's "marketing girl." I never received the official title (and monetary compensation) of course, but the responsibility has repeatedly fallen on my shoulders. I'd like to think it's because I'm good at it. Actually ... I will think that ... sound like a plan?

When I found myself abruptly unemployed last summer I was faced with three options.

1. Go on unemployment: not all that desirable, and considering I'm a single mother of three, not all that responsible either.
2. Jump back in and hit the streets applying for jobs. I started this, a little. I put my resume out and got in touch with some key people, but my heart wasn't in it.
3. Take a chance, jump in with both feet, and make a go at working for myself.

And here we are.

Cambridge Event & Design is an events and marketing company that I run out of my home in Jeffersonville, VT. My overhead is low, and so are my prices. I coordinate events ranging from weddings to parades to family festivals and fundraisers. Events are fun ... they're exciting and frankly there's nothing better than seeing smiles on children's faces, but they aren't the backbone of this business. Marketing is what gets me by and it's what keeps me going. I really enjoy the design aspect of putting together ads, packaging, signs and banners, logos ... you name it. I have a special kinship with my computer and my design software that most people don't have. It's silly, I know, but I honestly do LOVE what I do. Lucky me. Lucky you.

There are so many struggling musicians in this world ... as a matter of fact, there are so many struggling musicians in VERMONT. Yet here I am promoting one such band over the others. Why, you ask? Well because I believe in this band. Lowest of Tides isn't exactly my kind of music but ... and I don't know that they fit into any specific genre but ... Wait ... what's my problem? How about I allow them to describe themselves?

"We are the unlikely combination of men from very different walks of life, testing and experimenting with the boundaries and limits of our own creative minds. Lacking any sort of marriage to one particular sound or genre, we met under very unlikely and ironic circumstances. We are an amalgam of youth and experience, a mix of beauty and ugliness, a representation of the duality of darkness and light. We are not the first or the last to use music as a conduit for the search of a higher truth, or a greater consciousness. We cannot claim precedent in our dual use of hypnotic ambient interludes and brutally heavy and dissonant tones. All we can do is create, for we are only governed by the restraints of our own knowledge and capacity, which through many mediums respective to each member grows everyday. It is in this fact that illustrates the difference between ‘them’ and us, for we will take you on a journey, our own journey of the internal and innate parts of the human psyche. We will carry you with us and shield you from the blinding light as we discover more about ourselves and the ever-changing environment we live in. We are completely and wholly open to you, if you will have us."

It's amazing really when two people from varied upbringings find themselves together and passionate about the same thing: creating. The Mill and Anvil is one such partnership, between best friends and spouses Chad and Linda Blasch. Linda works hard at her sewing machine or in the kitchen. Mixing ingredients and pairing fabrics to build beautiful high-quality products. Meanwhile Chad is hard at work with fire and metal, forging both classic and abstract metalwork pieces for the home and garden.

Sometimes in life we meet people randomly who end up sticking around for a while. It was one such random encounter that led me to Chad and Linda Blasch, a newlywed couple living in Jeffersonville, VT. Since I met the Blasch's last year their lives have gone through some major changes. Linda quit her 9-5 office job and Chad decided to strike out on his own doing what he does best, forging and farrier work. It was during this transition that the couple decided it was time to make a go at living off of what they love, and so The Mill and Anvil was born.

Linda is an accomplished seamstress specializing in handbags, wallets, sacks, backpacks and duffles. She's also tried her hand at mixing herbs and essential oils to create scented body products. She's currently interning at Way Out Wax, based in Morrisville, VT to learn the ropes of candle making.

Chad has been forging metals for years. He attended Cornell's veterinary school and gained his credentials in Farrier Science. He's since expanded on his work to include designer housewares. More on Chad later ... today is Linda's day to shine.

We all need an electrician ...

Here's my story: Two years ago I bought a basic Hunter ceiling fan at Home Depot. After the box sat on my dining room table for about a month I got tired of looking at it and decided to put the fan together. This took me maybe 30 minutes and there I had a beautiful cherry-blade and aged bronze ceiling fan ... sitting on my dining room table. The fan has since migrated about the house. If only I had a closet big enough ... but I don't. Post-dining-room-table it sat in the corner of the living room for a bit, but after the kids realized it could be colored on with markers it got moved again. It moved onto the front enclosed porch, in the corner, as far from daily traffic as I could possibly get it. I did periodically trip over it when vacuuming and the blades have been chewed on a bit by the cat. Who knew that the finished product would actually be about 3 times bigger than the fan-in-a-box? That lasted two years.

I'm pretty handy around the house. I do my own painting and some light carpentry. I've been known to lay glue-down flooring and patch plaster walls ... but I'm no electrician. Finally I gave up the dream of eventually hanging the fan myself and I called Matt Schoop, Journeyman Electrician. Matt laughed at my plight ... and I don't blame him. He was in my living room less than a week later and the fan was in. He even patched up the holes he'd had to make to wire up into the 120 year old ceiling that had never before seen electrical wiring. Now I have a fan ... and thank god, because it's been toasty warm around here.

I'm the first person to admit that hiring contractors to work on your home can be tough. It seems like every Tom, Dick (and Jane!) is out there claiming quality craftsmanship and trying to make a buck off your household situation. What else can the responsible homeowner do but rely on word-of-mouth and others' recommendations?

Well here it is: I recommend Matt Schoop, Journeyman Electrician for your household, commercial, and petroleum industry electrical needs. promoteVT is excited to be kicking off the second month of this exciting marketing campaign. I have met so many great people and learned more about VT businesses! It's been more amazing then I could have ever dreamed of. I LOVE all of the positive feedback that we have received from businesses who have had new clients/customers who heard about them through promoteVT! Also, people in the community thanking me for promote Vermont!

It is MY pleasure to be doing this. It is so much fun and very rewarding with every "Thank You"!

A couple of things have changed since we launched on January 1. The first big change was our website! The second change was our pricing system. We have changed things over to a flat rate which is $50/day - still NO minimum amount of days needed. However, we do have a few businesses who are doing one day each month for a few months or even the rest of the year. It's totally up to you - if you only want to book one day, that's totally fine!

Comfort Cookies started as a ‘fluke’ in 2006 with one flavor: Chocolate Chip. Friends had been telling them for years to try and sell their cookie because they thought it was delicious. After reading an article in the NY Times about home-bakers, they realized it was possible and so Comfort Cookies was born! Today Comfort Cookies has grown to 30 flavors…including Gluten Free varieties.

Gluten-Free Comfort Cookies came about because people said, “Your cookies look really good but I cannot have wheat.” So in the Fall of 2009, they started experimenting with wheat-free flours. They have gotten inspiring feedback and so this has sparked them to try to keep adding more flavors!

They love to do tastings/demos for their cookies because they love meeting people, listening to their ideas AND they want folks to sample before they buy. Also in meeting them, they can see who they are ‘supporting’ when they purchase a Comfort Cookie. They really do believe that the world is a big community and we need to put their efforts where their mouths are. They find a lot of people in Vermont think like them and that is one of the primary reasons they moved here last year. People talk about the cold weather in Vermont but they tell folks the ‘warmth of the people’ here more than makes up for it!

They believe in kindness, compassion and passion! They believe in volunteerism and advocacy and see their cookies as an avenue to continue supporting the fight against hunger, child abuse and pediatric cancer and other related childhood diseases.

Comfort Cookies also made a vow 3 years ago to continue sending ‘Care Packages’ overseas to the men and women who proudly support our country in war-torn places like Iraq and Afghanistan. Maple & Apple Braised Chicken

Serves 4

4 boneless, skin-on chicken breasts

Salt and ground black pepper

3 tablespoons grape seed oil

1 apple, sliced

1/3 cup apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar

1/3 cup maple syrup

1 bay leaf

1 ½ teaspoons fresh thyme leaves

1/2 cup chicken stock or Apple Cider

2 tablespoon unsalted butter

1. Preheat oven to 425º.

2. Season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper.

3. Heat a large oven proof sauté pan over medium high heat and add oil. When hot add chicken breasts skin side down. Brown the chicken on both sides then add apple slices.

4. Add vinegar, maple syrup, bay leaf, thyme, and stock to the sauté pan. Bring to a boil. Place pan in oven and roast until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165° F, 6-10 minutes.

5. Remove chicken from the oven. If needed reduce sauce 3 minutes to thicken over high heat. Turn heat off, add butter and adjust the seasoning.

6. Serve chicken with sauce and mashed potatoes!

This was super easy to make! I took one bit and was in heaven. I felt like a gourmet chef! My husband said that it was the best thing I have ever made!!! And wants to have this again for dinner... SOON!

efusjon is a brand new company. They officially launch Jan 30th when they kick off they International tour prior to the Winter Olympics in CANADA!! With this company being new (well, 67,000 people have walked through the doors so far) TJ's connection to the retired VP of Dean Witter Financials who brought him into the company, his friend Peter Hawks, has him positioned with only 1000 of those 67,000 people above him. Meaning, if you were on your way to a football game and waiting in line to get into the game and you were the 1000th person in line and those other 66,000 people had to pass a dollar up to you, that would make you very happy. That is what he is trying to offer his friends and family - a position in this company. Not if, but when, this company becomes hugely successful, it would be extremely safe to say the people who jump on board are really well off!!! That's the biz side of it...

What really matters, is the health side of it. Everybody we know should be consuming these antioxidants to prevent cancer and other disease!! How do you make people believers??? LISTEN TO THIS: TJ's close friend Eric who had inoperable brain cancer didn't hesitate - studies have shown just the Acai Berry alone kills 83% of cancer cells in test tube experiments.

Here's my take on the whole thing:
As far as the taste goes - I was SHOCKED! I am incredibly picky!!! So, when TJ first wanted me to try one of these drinks, I was actually quite nervous. But, to my amazement, they really are good. My husband and I tried 3 of them at first, and we both really enjoyed the taste. It's quite smooth and refreshing!

No box cake mix here! Well, the only boxed cake mix that she uses is for gluten-free cakes. She has tried many different recipes for her gluten-free cakes, but is not pleased with the taste. The services that Chef Courtney Contos offered, are still called upon today. No matter how large, small or intimate these parties were, Chef Contos was delivering excellent services and her passion continued to grow for all things culinary.
Chef Courtney Contos has even tested recipes for Martha Stewart's magazine "Every Day Food" - 2002 while she was in New York City.

In addition to her business, Chef Contos was the culinary instructor at The Chopping Block Cooking Schools in Chicago from 2003 through 2006. She enjoyed teaching cooking classes, with a hands-on demonstration environment, for approximately sixteen attendants.

Chef Courntey Contos didn't stop with the above accomplishments. Along with her own business, she further went on to join the blogging world in 2006. In 2008, she wrote the initial "Cooking Fresh" article in Edible Green Mountains Magazine. Stay tuned to a national "Edibles Cookbook", in print 2010, for some of her own recipes.

Over the years, you may have seen Chef Contos on many TV cooking segments. She takes great pride in also appearing on local TV to provide seasonal recipes, including those with ingredients of farm fresh foods from Vermont. Her enthusiasm has also spread to bee keeping, maple sugaring, and organic vegetable and fruit gardening. Chef Contos is in the process of developing her first cookbook, yet unnamed, as her passion for food writing has also been never-ending.

So, where did Chef Courtney Contos begin her passion for all things culinary?
When Chef Contos was very young, she admired the work of her father while being at his side at one of Chicago's finest restaurants, Chez Paul, a family restaurant open from 1948-1992. There is where her love for culinary began and her understanding of the restaurant businesses developed.

Here's some more information about Sarah Bove Studio located in Sola Salon - Williston, Vermont (right near Tafts Corners).

Sarah moved to Sola Salon a little over 2 months ago. She wanted to be able to work more independently, take more client suggestions and wanted to be able to supply organic and natural products to her clients. Her clients love the privacy of this interesting and unique salon setup. Each stylist within Sola Salon has their own individual salon. Each salon is in a separate, large room with sliding glass doors and curtains if privacy is requested. There is no need to walk around and for everyone to see you with foils on your head when getting highlights! All can be done in the privacy of one room.

Sarah appreciates that Vermonters are understanding to organic products. She uses organic/natural/biodegradable products throughout her salon from the garbage bags to the laundry detergent to the soap and plastic bags. Sarah uses organic color which is ammonia free and has a low percentage of PPD's (which some people are allergic to). She loves Vermont and will be here for a long time.

Time has flown by! But we love it. Can't wait for the new year and the new venture.

A lot of people have asked why I am doing this whole promoteVT.com thing. Well, I thought it was time to answer!
First off, I love Vermont businesses. As much as I complain about the weather, I do really enjoy VT. There's something special to a VT business. Most people are very friendly, most businesses have that family feel, and everyone is looking to better themselves and business. I'm not going to say that I've never bought from a big box store, however when ever I do, I feel a sense of guilt for not buying from a VT business. It's the little businesses who make a difference to the great slogan 'BUY LOCAL'. I can really appreciate that slogan and know that other VT businesses do as well.
The other reason that I wanted to do this was I also love marketing, branding and people. Social media is hot right now, so what better way to market a business then with social media. I'm not an expert at social media and will be the first to admit that, however I do know that I'm getting the hang of it and will enjoy working towards perfection.
I really wanted to do something that would help make a difference to people in the community and do something exciting and new. This has been quite an experience so far and I can't wait for the big launch on 1/1/10!

I also wanted to share an email that i received from a VT business that has signed on with us to have their business promoted:

Quick comments that will attract people to your business. Your contact information, sales and/or promotions can hit a lot of people with very little effort.

A few words does it!
Once you initially get the attention of the prospect, then you can explain your company in more detail. Easy explanations of what your business is all about. It doesn't need to be drawn out in complex form.

People share, people talk!
People can easily pass the information on with just a click of the mouse. You're information, comments, tweets, etc will travel to others fast! Relaxed marketing within a social environment is more comforting then being bombarded with business information.

New and exciting!
People on twitter, Facebook, blogs, etc are possibly a whole different market then those who you are already hitting with other means of marketing. Social media is hot right now, exciting and still pretty new. People are exciting about being on twitter and Facebook and are on it... A LOT!

Timing is everything
You can market with social media at all times of the day. If you happen to be up at 3am, but your time to use! We're not saying that you need to be awake 24/7, however if you want to promote your business and happen to have a free moment, but that time to good purpose!

Interaction
People feel special when they communicate with a company. Especially if they can just chat with to someone. It might be about the business, or commenting on how the weather is outside. Either way, people feel more of a connection when they can just type how they are feeling or what's on their mind. Social media is also a great way to get some customer/client insight on your company!

It's one of the cheapest ways of marketing!

You get the idea, we think that social media is key for any business. It's a great way to promote yourself, get your information out there and interact with consumers.

My name is Mauranda Dalziel. I live in Jericho, Vermont with my husband and daughter. I love my family, friends, working, meeting new people and laughing! I am the owner of VIP Consulting, LLC. We have 2 divisions: our Marking Division is aimed towards small business owners and our Events Division is geared towards brides and grooms-to-be as well as providing event planning services to many different types of events within Vermont. All of those involved in VIP Consulting absolutely LOVE our job! We have fun and know how to make a difference. What we do:
We take your company information (what you do, who you are, why people need to know about you) and share that info with people on twitter, facebook and our blog for one day. Each and every day of the year (including holidays and weekends), we promote one business. Some days we will take pictures of ourselves with a product of a business, if available. Other days we might do video - or, we might just type a lot of cool stuff about a VT business. If you have a promotional or marketing item that you want me to take pictures of/with or hold up during the video, etc, send it to me and I’ll share it.
It’s a great ‘break the ice’ type of marketing strategy. Maybe the people that we are communicating with have never heard of you before, or maybe they have heard of you but don’t know what you do. Or - it could just be a refresher that you are a great company that they need to do business with. Either way, it’s targeting people in the area. We only promote VT businesses. The great slogan of ‘BUY LOCAL’ is huge for us. We are a VT business promoting other VT businesses.

How much does it cost:
Each day of the year, the costs goes up one dollar, starting at $1 on January 1st.
So, January 1 costs $1, January 31 costs $31, February 1 costs $32, December 31 costs $365. It’s really an easy system…

Therefore, as the year goes by, the cost goes up, as will the amount of people who are checking in to see what business we are promoting that day.

Will I really get any business:
I’d like to hope so! But, remember that one HUGE part of marketing your business is getting your name out there. This is just another way to do that. Your phone probably won’t ring off the hook the day that your business is promoted, however it will get your company into the minds of those following us. And, don’t forget - PEOPLE TALK!...A LOT!... So, one person who follows us might tell a friend who tells a family member who tells another friend, therefore, the word is out!
